How to Choose the Right Coil Baby Mattress For Your Infant

Although the coil baby mattress is still the most popular type of crib mattress, that does not mean that it is any better than a foam baby mattress. You can find good quality mattresses of both types, but if you are interested in getting a coil baby mattress, here are a few things to look for to make sure you get the best one for your needs.

All baby mattresses are made in layers. With a coil baby mattress, the main layers to consider are the coil layer, the padding layer and the cushion layer.

The Cushion Layer

The cushion layer is what provides the softness to the baby mattress. Although it may be tempting to get a deep cushion layer, it is essential that it not be too soft so that your baby does not sink into it as this poses a risk of suffocation.

The Padding Layer

Also known as the insulator layer, the padding layer is what protects the cushion layer from the coil layer. This layer can be made of several different types of material and it is very important that you learn what is in the baby mattress you are buying.

Believe it or not, a material made from a part of the coconut shell is the best material for this layer. This material, called coir fibre, is formed into a pad and this pad is used to cover the coil layer. Although this is the most expensive type of padding layer, it is sturdy and is water resistant.

The more common type of pad used in the padding layer is made from scraps of various material, usually off the cutting room floor, pressed into a pad. These pads, often called fibre wrap, can feel softer than those made from coir fibre, but they tend to break down more easily over time. This can result in an uneven or lumpy baby mattress.

The Coils

Needless to say it is the steel coils that give the mattress its firmness and spring. These properties are dependent on both the number of springs and the thickness or gauge of the steel.

The lowest spring count that will provide a firm mattress is around 150. With more coils there is less space between them giving more even support. For the same gauge steel, the more coils the firmer the crib mattress. When you are shopping for the baby mattress, press on or squeeze the mattress to get a feel for the firmness.

If the steel coils are a heavier the gauge the mattress will be firmer. Gauges run from around 13 to 19, with 19 being the thinnest. Therefore a mattress with 200 springs with a steel gauge of 15 will be firmer than one with the same number of coils with a gauge of 19.

Finding a good combination of spring count and steel gauge is important in selecting a good baby crib mattress. One with a coil count of around 150 with a gauge of 13.5 will provide even and firm support and will be reasonably priced.

Support Bars

In addition to the layers, border support rods, found around the edges of the mattress, are available on some baby mattresses. These steel rods provide extra support so that when your baby begins to stand up in the crib the sides will not collapse.

When buying the right coil baby mattress for your needs, it comes down to finding a firm crib mattress with good support that you can afford. By using the information above you will know what to look for so you can more easily find a good quality baby mattress.
